Your Diet During Your Recovery

Along with rest and proper wound care, you recovery plan should factor in good nutrition. An orthopedic surgery can place a lot of stress on the body as the body’s metabolism is elevated when it is repairing tissue. Proper nutrition is critical for tissue growth, wound repair and healing.

While MEND will add critical amino acids and boost your recovery, it is not a meal replacement and you will need to get key nutrients into your body in sufficient amounts. Remember, during recovery, your body will need MORE than the baseline level of nutrients that you typically consume.

Protein will be critical for both bone and muscle repair. While you will get most of your critical amino acids from MEND, consuming protein rich foods will help your recovery. Ideally you’ll want to take 1 to 1.5 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight.

For vitamins and minerals we recommend increasing your intake of Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Zinc and Calcium. Vitamin D and Calcium work together and will support bone healing and Zinc and Vitamin C will provide wound healing support.

Finally to counteract the digestive effects of the medications you will be taking, you’ll want to increase your fiber intake and add foods like yogurt and probiotics.
